from 'halloween iii: season of the witch' ... the only one worth watching!
another notable season of the witch - luna's cover of the awesome donovan song. it was recorded for 'i shot andy warhol.' the only time i saw them perform it live was halloween eve, 2004 when they opened with it at maxwell's in hoboken, nj.
we carved our jack-o-lanterns tonight. i made a robot-o-lantern in keeping with my recent robot fascination, and peter made the pumpkin king: here is erik in his frog costume that he gets to wear to school tomorrow:
the miller-urey experiment was conducted in 1956 to probe the origins of life on earth. they used an apparatus to simulate the temperature/pressure/chemical conditions present on prebiotic earth and looked for the formation of organic compounds from the inorganic gases thought to exist in earth's primitive atmosphere. at the time they discovered the presence of 5 amino acids, however recent analysis of the material created from their original experiment showed that 22 amino acids were formed. for those who don't know, proteins (which play many roles, including carrying out all the metabolic processes in all life forms as we know them) are composed of chains of amino acids, the same ones formed from this experiment. pretty cool stuff!
my niece morgan is turning 7 and had a really great party at yeck farms last saturday. the weather was absolutely perfect and erik had so much fun running amok! hot dogs were roasted over an open fire (by my brother adam): he was really twitchy by the end of the party because it was 15 minutes until kickoff of the penn state game. there was birthday cake, of course: and lots of presents and little girls screaming: they had a pinata. erik loved swinging the stick around: there were pumpkins: and baby animals: but i think the best part was the hay ride! oh, there was also a corn maze (maize heheheh), but we didn't go through it: happy 7th birthday morgan!
